Custom Solid Oak Side Table & End Table

Product Overview

Solid Oak, Honest Grain, Enduring Form — Crafted to Your Exact Dimension

This side table is constructed entirely from kiln-dried solid oak — selected for its tight, consistent grain structure and its long-term dimensional stability in both humid and dry interior environments. Unlike products manufactured from oak-veneer MDF or engineered board, every surface of this table is genuine solid timber. The visible grain on the tabletop, the legs, and the shelf or stretcher (where specified) is continuous, uninterrupted, and unique to each individual piece. No two units are exactly alike.

The table is available in a range of surface finishes that alter the visual tone of the oak without obscuring its natural character. A natural oil finish enhances the open grain and amber warmth of the timber, leaving a low-sheen surface that can be re-oiled in the field. A clear lacquer finish provides a harder, more maintenance-free surface while preserving a near-natural appearance. Stain-plus-lacquer combinations — in light ash, honey, walnut, smoked, or ebonised black — allow the table to be integrated into a wider palette of interior colour schemes without sacrificing material honesty.

Dimensions, top shape, leg profile, leg taper, and finish are all specified at the order stage. The table functions equally well as a bedside end table at 55–65 cm height, a sofa side table at 60–70 cm, or a low accent table at 40–50 cm for use alongside deep seating. Custom heights and top diameters outside standard ranges are accepted on request.

Solid Hardwood Frame

Every component — top, legs, stretcher — is solid oak throughout. No veneer, no MDF core. Kiln-dried to below 8% moisture content for long-term dimensional stability.

Multiple Surface Finish Options

Natural oil, clear lacquer, or stain + lacquer in five standard tones. All finishes are applied by hand in multiple coats with intermediate sanding for a consistent, durable surface.

Natural Grain Matching Across All Surfaces

Oak boards are selected and oriented so that grain direction is visually consistent across the tabletop and coordinated with the leg grain — producing a coherent, considered object.

Custom Height, Top Shape & Leg Profile

Height adjustable from 40 cm (low accent) to 75 cm (standing reach). Top shape options include round, square, rectangular, and oval. Leg profiles: tapered, straight, hairpin, or turned.

From Tabletop Shape to Leg Taper — Every Detail Is Specifiable

A side table placed beside a low lounge chair has different dimensional requirements from one used as a bedside table in a hotel suite or an accent table in a hotel lobby corridor. Our factory accepts complete custom specifications for every unit. All dimensions, joinery, finish, and top shape are confirmed in a technical drawing before production begins — ensuring the finished piece matches your brief exactly.

Why JL&C Furniture

One Factory, One Team, One Point of Contact — From Timber to Dispatch

Solid wood furniture — particularly pieces as precise in proportion as a side table — is unforgiving of specification errors and production shortcuts. A millimetre of height error in one leg, an inconsistent grain orientation on the top, or a finish applied too thinly on a visible surface are all immediately apparent in use. Our Shanghai factory controls every stage of this table’s production: timber selection and drying, milling, joinery, assembly, finishing, and quality inspection. There are no intermediaries, no subcontractors, and no quality dilution through a trading company layer.

This matters practically for clients working on project briefs. When you specify a particular height, a specific stain tone, or a non-standard top dimension, your instruction goes directly to the team cutting and finishing the timber — not via an agent interpreting a specification sheet. Pre-production drawing confirmation, mid-production progress updates, and pre-dispatch photography are all part of our standard workflow for custom orders. We work with interior designers on single commissions and with hotel procurement teams on batches of 100+ pieces, applying the same approach at both scales.

“Solid oak is a material that only improves with time when it is properly finished and maintained. We choose it for this table because we want pieces that look better after five years in a room than they did on delivery day.”

What Our Clients Say About JL&C Furniture Custom Solid Oak Side Table

We specified 80 solid oak side tables for a boutique hotel room programme — each one a bedside end table at a custom height to suit the bed platform we had designed. JL&C delivered every unit with consistent grain matching, identical finish tone, and spot-on dimensions. For a solid wood batch order at this scale, the consistency was genuinely impressive. We will be using them for our next project without hesitation.”

Hotel Interior Design Manager · Boutique Hotel Group, Dubai

“I commissioned two custom accent tables for a residential client — one low at 45 cm for beside a deep sofa, one at 65 cm as a bedside table. Both in smoked oak stain with a cross-stretcher base. JL&C confirmed dimensions in a drawing before production, sent pre-dispatch photos for sign-off, and delivered both pieces well-packaged and undamaged. The finish quality and grain selection were exactly at the level I expected from the sample they sent.”

Senior Interior Designer · Luxury Residential Studio, Singapore

“Factory-direct pricing from JL&C made genuine solid oak viable for our villa project budget — we had been quoted significantly more from local suppliers for veneer products of lower quality. The natural oil finish on the tables has aged beautifully in the year since installation. MOQ of one piece and a clear lead time made the whole process straightforward. Already ordered additional pieces for the second villa.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a solid oak side table and one made from oak veneer MDF?

A solid oak side table is constructed entirely from genuine oak timber throughout — every leg, every rail, and the tabletop are solid wood with continuous grain running through the full thickness of each component. An oak veneer MDF product has a thin layer (typically 0.3–2 mm) of real oak bonded to a core of medium-density fibreboard. The differences in practice are significant: solid oak is denser, heavier, more resistant to impact and surface denting, structurally stronger at the joinery points, and can be re-sanded and re-finished if the surface is damaged. Veneer MDF cannot be re-finished and is permanently damaged if the veneer is scratched through to the core.

What top shapes are available, and can I request an oval or custom form?

Standard top shapes are round, square, and rectangular. Oval tops are available on request — specify the long-axis and short-axis dimensions. Other custom top forms — such as a D-shape for placement against a wall, or a slightly irregular organic form — can be discussed at the quotation stage; feasibility depends on the specific geometry and is assessed case by case.

Can I add a lower shelf or stretcher to the table?

Yes. A lower shelf — in solid oak matching the tabletop finish — can be added at a specified height from the floor, typically 15–25 cm. The shelf can match the top shape at a reduced scale, or be a different shape (e.g., a square lower shelf under a round top). Structural stretchers in cross (X) or H configurations are also available and increase the rigidity of the base. Lower shelves and stretchers are specified in the technical drawing confirmation prior to production.

Is solid oak suitable for use in hotels and high-traffic commercial environments?

Yes, with appropriate finish specification. For commercial environments where the surface will be subject to daily handling, beverage placement, and regular cleaning, we recommend a clear lacquer or stain-plus-lacquer finish over natural oil — lacquer provides a harder, more moisture-resistant surface. The structural joinery (mortise-and-tenon or reinforced dowel, glued and pinned) is specified to handle the load cycles of commercial use without loosening over time. We regularly supply to hotel room programmes and hospitality lounge fit-outs.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

MOQ is 1 piece — there is no minimum order quantity. Standard lead time is 25–35 business days after written order confirmation and deposit receipt. This covers timber selection, drying, milling, joinery, assembly, finishing, quality inspection, and export packaging. For batch orders of 20 or more pieces, or units with highly non-standard specifications, lead time is confirmed individually at quotation.

What height should I specify for a side table beside a sofa versus beside a bed?

The most functional height for a sofa side table places the table surface at approximately the same level as the sofa arm — typically 55–68 cm depending on the sofa design. For a bedside table, the most practical height positions the table surface level with, or slightly below, the top of the mattress — typically 60–70 cm for a standard bed with mattress. For a low accent table beside a deep lounge chair or daybed, 40–50 cm is typically most comfortable for reach. We can produce any height within the 40–75 cm range, and custom heights outside this range are available on request.

What leg profiles are available, and how does the choice affect the table's character?

Four standard leg profiles are offered: tapered square (gives a light, contemporary appearance), straight square (heavier, more architectural), round tapered (softer, warmer profile), and turned (traditional craft detail with rings or coves). The choice of leg significantly affects the visual weight of the piece: tapered legs make a table appear lighter and less imposing in a room; straight square legs make it appear more grounded and substantial. We can also provide leg section sketches for client review at the quotation stage.

What surface finish options are available, and can I specify a custom stain colour?

Standard options are natural oil, clear lacquer, and stain-plus-lacquer in five tones: light ash, honey, walnut, smoked, and ebonised black. Custom stain colours are available by RAL colour reference or submitted physical sample. A test panel on matching oak is produced and sent for client approval before full finish application. Custom stain typically adds 3–5 business days to the standard lead time.

How is the oak grain direction oriented on the tabletop?

For round and square tops, the dominant grain runs parallel to the longer visual axis of the piece (or radially for bookmatched tops on request). For rectangular tops, grain runs along the length of the table. Where multiple boards are needed to achieve the specified top width, boards are matched for similar grain direction and colour tone before lamination. Grain direction for the legs is oriented vertically (along the length of the leg) as standard. Custom grain orientation requests — such as horizontal grain on a tabletop — are accepted and confirmed in the drawing.

How is the table packaged for international shipping, and how should I handle it on arrival?

Each table is individually foam-wrapped with leg protection, placed in a reinforced export carton with internal foam partitioning, and loaded onto a wooden pallet for container shipping. We ship FOB Shanghai as standard; CIF to destination port is available on request. On arrival, allow the carton to acclimatise to the interior environment for 24 hours before unpacking — this is particularly important if the piece is entering a climate-controlled environment from a cold or humid container. Wipe the surface with a dry cloth before first use.
