Custom Solid Oak Bookshelf with Steel Frame & Tinted Glass

Product Overview

Where Solid Oak Craftsmanship Meets Precision Steel and Tinted Glass

This bookshelf is built from three primary materials — each chosen for a specific structural and aesthetic purpose. The carcass, fixed shelves, and back panel are constructed from kiln-dried solid oak, selected for grain consistency and dimensional stability. Oak is specified here not as a veneer or engineered board, but as genuine solid timber: denser, heavier, and more resistant to the long-term racking and joint failure that affect lower-grade wood-based alternatives.

The structural frame — the vertical uprights and horizontal cross-members — is fabricated from stainless steel tube or flat bar, electroplated in-house to your selected finish. The steel frame performs a dual role: it reinforces the overall rigidity of a tall, freestanding unit, and it introduces a precise industrial character that contrasts with the warmth of the oak. Finish options include brushed gold, brushed silver, satin chrome, and matte black, all applied to hospitality-grade durability standards.

The tinted glass panels — bronzed or grey tinted, 5–8 mm tempered — are mounted within the steel frame channels to partially enclose selected shelf bays. Tinted glass reduces direct visual exposure of shelf contents while maintaining a sense of depth and translucency; it also protects books and objects from dust without fully closing the compartment. The result is a bookshelf that reads as a display object in its own right, not merely functional storage.

Kiln-Dried Solid Oak Construction

Genuine solid oak — not veneer, not engineered board. Kiln-dried for dimensional stability, grain-matched across shelves and panels for visual consistency.

Tinted Tempered Glass Panels

5–8 mm bronzed or grey tinted tempered glass, mounted in steel frame channels. Translucent enclosure protects contents from dust while preserving visual depth.

Fully Custom Dimensions & Configuration

Width, height, depth, shelf count, bay configuration, and open-vs-glass-enclosed ratios are all adjustable to your project specification.

Precision-Fabricated Stainless Steel Frame

Structural steel uprights and cross-members, electroplated in-house. Reinforces unit rigidity and delivers a refined industrial-meets-natural material contrast.

Four Steel Finish Options

Brushed gold, brushed silver, satin chrome, and matte black — all electroplated to hospitality-grade durability standards and coordinated with oak finish selection.

Export-Ready Disassembled Packaging

Frame, shelves, and glass panels packed individually in foam-lined compartments. Reinforced export carton on wooden pallet for safe international freight.

Made to Your Specification

Six Configurable Parameters — From Grain Direction to Glass Tint

A bookshelf designed for a hotel library study has fundamentally different requirements from one built for a private residential home office or a corporate executive suite. Our factory accepts full custom specifications across all six parameters below. Each order begins with a technical drawing confirmation before production commences — no assumptions, no surprises.

Overall Dimensions & Shelf Configuration

Define the footprint and internal structure to match your spatial brief. Overall width: 80–220 cm (custom; multi-module configurations available) Overall height: 180–240 cm (custom; floor-to-ceiling on request) Depth: 28–45 cm Number of shelves: 3–8 per unit (adjustable) Shelf spacing: fixed or adjustable-peg system

Solid Oak Grade & Finish

Select the oak treatment that best suits your interior palette and maintenance requirements. Natural oil finish (enhances grain, easy re-oiling maintenance) Clear lacquer (hard surface, low maintenance) Stain + lacquer: light ash, honey, walnut, dark espresso, or custom RAL Grain direction: vertical (standard) or horizontal (custom on request) All oak surfaces sanded to 240-grit before finishing

Base & Foot Detail

The base transitions the bookshelf from floor to unit and affects overall height. Solid oak plinth base (flush to carcass — traditional) Recessed steel toe-kick (floating appearance) Exposed steel legs: tapered, square or round profile, in any frame finish Adjustable levelling feet (concealed, for uneven floors)

Custom Solid Oak Bookshelf with Steel Frame & Tinted Glass

Why JL&C Furniture

Why Interior Designers & Hospitality Buyers Choose JL&C Furniture

Every stage of production for this bookshelf takes place within our Shanghai factory. Solid oak components are milled, dried, and finished in-house. Steel frames are cut, welded, ground, and electroplated in our metal workshop. Tinted glass panels are sourced from certified float glass suppliers, cut to dimension, and tempered before being dry-fitted into the steel channels during assembly. This single-factory approach means that the coordination between wood dimensions, steel frame tolerances, and glass panel sizing is managed by one team, not three separate subcontractors working from independent drawings.

For procurement managers and interior designers, this translates into a straightforward working process: one point of contact, one drawing confirmation, one quality inspection before dispatch. Our clients include hotel groups furnishing library lounges and executive floors, residential developers specifying storage walls in premium apartments, and private homeowners commissioning a single bespoke bookshelf for a study or entrance hall. All are handled with the same technical rigour and direct communication.

What Our Clients Say About JL&C Furniture Custom Solid Oak Bookshelf with Steel Frame & Tinted Glass

“We commissioned a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf wall for our hotel’s private library lounge — twelve individual units spanning 14 metres in total width. JL&C provided full technical drawings, confirmed the oak grain direction I requested, and delivered every unit on schedule. The brushed gold steel frame against the walnut-stained oak was exactly the finish pairing I had in mind. Exceptional execution.”

Hotel Interior Design Director · Luxury Boutique Hotel Group, Hong Kong

“I specified a custom bookshelf for a private study — natural oil oak, matte black steel, bronze tinted glass on the upper bays, open lower shelves. JL&C built a sample shelf section for approval before the full unit entered production. The grain matching across the oak panels was outstanding and the steel-to-glass fit was tight and clean. A genuinely premium piece.”

Senior Interior Designer · High-End Residential Studio, Singapore

“Our villa project required 8 matching bookshelves across three rooms. Factory-direct pricing from JL&C made the material quality at that price point possible — we could not have achieved solid oak, electroplated steel and tempered tinted glass through a local supplier at the same cost. Communication was clear throughout and every unit arrived undamaged. Already planning the next phase.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is solid oak specified rather than oak veneer or engineered wood?

Solid oak provides structural density and dimensional mass that veneer and engineered alternatives cannot replicate. In a tall freestanding bookshelf subject to the weight of books and decorative objects, solid timber resists joint deflection, surface denting, and long-term racking far more effectively than boards with a thin veneer layer over MDF or particleboard. Solid oak can also be re-sanded and re-finished if surface wear occurs over time — engineered boards cannot.

What steel frame finishes are available, and are they durable?

Four standard finish options are available: brushed gold, brushed silver, satin chrome, and matte black. All are applied via an electroplating process in our in-house metal workshop. The plating meets hospitality-grade durability standards — tested for resistance to tarnish, surface abrasion, and environmental humidity at the levels typical of residential and hotel interiors. A powder coat overcoat can be added for additional protection in high-traffic environments.

Can the glass bays be configured as doors rather than fixed panels?

Yes. Glass panels can be specified as hinged doors or sliding doors in addition to fixed panels. Hinged doors use concealed or exposed steel hinges in the selected frame finish. Sliding doors operate on a recessed top track. Both options are available for bronze or grey tinted tempered glass in 5 mm or 8 mm thickness. Door configuration is confirmed in the technical drawing prior to production.

Can the bookshelf be built as a room divider or peninsula unit with an open back?

Yes. The back panel can be omitted entirely for room divider or peninsula placement — the unit is structurally sound without the back panel due to the steel frame construction. Alternatively, the back can be finished on both sides (mirrored oak grain or painted in contrasting colours) for units intended to be visible from two sides. This is confirmed in the drawing at the specification stage.

Can multiple units be combined to create a full wall of shelving?

Yes. Individual bookshelf units can be produced to a consistent width and joined side-by-side to form a continuous wall installation. Steel frames are aligned across units for a seamless visual run. We can also produce a single continuous unit wider than 220 cm, though for shipping and installation practicality we generally recommend modular units of 80–120 cm width that bolt together on-site.

How is the bookshelf packaged for international shipping?

All units are disassembled into primary components — frame, oak shelves, back panel sections, glass panels — before export packaging. Each component type is individually foam-wrapped and packed in a designated compartment within a reinforced export carton. Glass panels receive double foam wrapping with rigid board protection. The packed carton is loaded onto a wooden pallet for container shipping. We ship FOB Shanghai as standard, with CIF to destination port available on request.

What is tinted tempered glass and why is it used instead of clear glass?

Tinted tempered glass — commonly known in Chinese specification as (tea-coloured glass) — is float glass with a bronze or grey tint applied during the manufacturing process, then thermally tempered for safety. The tint reduces direct visibility into the enclosed shelf bay by approximately 40–60%, providing a semi-private visual effect for shelved objects while maintaining the translucent quality of glass. It is used instead of clear glass to soften the visual contrast between the glass and the objects behind it, and to create a warmer, more refined aesthetic compared to fully transparent glazing.

Is the stainless steel frame structural or purely decorative?

Both. The steel frame acts as a primary structural element: the vertical uprights run the full height of the unit and are anchored to both the base and the top cap, reinforcing the bookshelf against lateral racking loads — particularly important for tall units exceeding 180 cm in height. The frame also serves a strong decorative function, providing the visual outline and material contrast that defines the piece. Neither function is secondary.

What oak finish options are available, and can I specify a custom stain colour?

Standard oak finish options are natural oil, clear lacquer, and stain-plus-lacquer in light ash, honey, walnut, dark espresso, and ebonised black. Custom stain colours — specified by RAL reference or submitted sample — are available and will be produced as a small test panel for approval before full application. Custom stain specifications typically add 3–5 business days to the standard lead time.

How many shelves can the unit accommodate, and are they adjustable?

Standard configurations offer between 3 and 8 shelves per unit. Shelves can be fixed (dadoed into the carcass) for maximum load capacity, or mounted on an adjustable-peg system (5 cm increment adjustments) for flexible storage arrangements. Fixed shelves are recommended for units carrying heavy loads such as hardcover books or decorative stone objects.

What is the minimum order quantity and what is the lead time?

MOQ is 1 piece — there is no minimum quantity requirement. Standard lead time is 25–35 business days after written order confirmation and deposit receipt. This covers all production stages: timber milling and drying, steel frame fabrication and plating, glass cutting and tempering, assembly, quality inspection, and export packaging. For multi-unit batches of 10 or more pieces, or units with non-standard dimensions exceeding our standard range, lead time is confirmed individually at the quotation stage.

Is a sample or prototype available before placing a full order?

Yes. For single-unit commissions, the unit itself serves as the prototype — any specification concerns are resolved through the technical drawing confirmation process before production. For large batch orders (10+ units), we strongly recommend producing one sample unit for client sign-off before full batch production commences. Sample lead time is 15–20 business days. Sample cost is partially credited against the confirmed full order. Contact our team to initiate the process.
