Product Overview

Solid Wood Depth, Steel Precision, Smoked Glass Refinement — One Bookshelf Built to Outlast Trends

The decision to specify solid wood for a bookshelf instead of veneer or engineered board is not an aesthetic preference — it is a structural one. A tall, freestanding unit carrying the combined weight of books, objects and decorative pieces accumulates load at the shelf joints over years of use. Solid timber resists that load with a density and grain integrity that veneer-over-MDF or particleboard cannot match. The JL&C Custom Bookshelf is built from kiln-dried solid wood throughout its carcass — shelves, uprights and panels — selected for consistent grain, milled to dimension in our Shanghai workshop and finished to the specification you confirm before production begins.

The structural frame — the vertical uprights and horizontal cross-members that define the unit’s outer geometry — is fabricated from stainless steel, cut and welded in-house, then electroplated in your chosen finish. This steel skeleton performs two functions simultaneously: it reinforces the unit against the lateral racking that tall freestanding timber cabinets develop over time, and it introduces a material contrast that gives the bookshelf a precision and visual authority that all-timber construction rarely achieves. Four electroplated finish options — brushed gold, brushed silver, satin chrome and matte black — allow the frame to coordinate with or deliberately contrast against the wood and glass.

The glass panels are smoked tinted tempered glass — what the industry commonly refers to as tea glass . This is float glass produced with a bronze or warm grey tint integrated during manufacture, then thermally tempered for safety and durability. Smoked glass reduces direct visibility into the enclosed shelf bay by approximately 40 to 60 percent, creating a semi-private visual effect that softens the contrast between the glass and whatever sits behind it. Books stay accessible and visible enough to locate, but the glass does not expose the shelf contents with the flat transparency of clear glazing. The result is a bookshelf that reads as a composed, resolved object — not a storage unit that happens to have glass doors.

All three materials — solid wood, stainless steel and smoked tinted glass — are machined and assembled to consistent dimensional tolerances within our own factory. There is no subcontractor cutting the wood, a different workshop welding the steel and a third supplier supplying glass panels to approximate fits. One factory, one team, one technical drawing confirmed with you before a single component goes into production. Width, height, shelf count, bay configuration, open-to-enclosed ratio, wood finish and frame colour are all locked in that drawing before the first cut is made.

Made to Your Specification

Your Dimensions, Your Wood Finish, Your Glass Configuration — Confirmed in Writing Before Production Starts

No two JL&C bookcases leave our factory to the same specification unless the client requests an exact repeat. Every order is produced against a client-confirmed technical drawing covering all primary parameters. If a dimension, finish or configuration detail is not explicitly confirmed in that drawing, we ask before we cut — not after we build.

Size & Dimensions

Standard Queen, King and California King sizes are available immediately. For hotel rooms, private villas or any space with specific proportions, JL&C Furniture manufactures to any custom width, length or headboard height. Simply provide your measurements when enquiring.

Solid Wood Grade, Stain & Surface Finish

The solid wood species used for the carcass is confirmed at the order stage. Standard options include oak (medium density, strong grain pattern), walnut (rich dark grain, premium specification), ash (light tone, fine even grain) and pine (light weight, traditional character). All timber is kiln-dried before milling to minimise post-production dimensional movement.

Steel Frame Finish, Glass Specification & Base Detail

Smoked glass thickness is available in 5 mm (standard, lighter for door applications) and 8 mm (premium, provides greater sense of weight and enclosure quality). Glass panels can be specified as fixed panels mounted within steel frame channels, hinged doors (concealed or exposed steel hinges in the selected frame finish) or sliding doors (recessed top track, frameless appearance). Base detail options include a solid wood plinth flush to the carcass, a recessed steel toe-kick for a floating visual effect, or exposed steel legs in round, square or tapered profiles matching the frame finish.

Why JL&C Furniture

One Factory Handles the Wood, the Steel and the Glass — With No Handoffs and No Subcontractors

The reason most multi-material furniture disappoints on close inspection is not that the materials are wrong — it is that the tolerances between them are managed by multiple parties who are not in the same room. The solid wood panels come from one supplier. The steel frame is welded by a separate fabricator. The glass is cut by a glazing company working from a dimensioned order sheet. When these three components arrive for assembly, the gaps and misalignments are resolved by packing, shimming or accepting a finish quality that does not match the original drawing.

JL&C Furniture builds every bookshelf in this range from start to finish within our own Shanghai production facility. Our timber workshop mills, joins and finishes the solid wood components. Our metal workshop cuts, welds, grinds and electroplates the steel frame. Our glass supplier cuts and tempers to our exact panel dimensions, and our assembly team fits the three materials together against the confirmed technical drawing. When the solid wood shelf edge sits flush with the steel frame channel and the smoked glass panel seats cleanly within it with no visible gap, that outcome is the result of one team controlling every dimension — not three separate suppliers hoping their tolerances align.

This approach matters most to the clients whose projects have no margin for error: interior designers whose client will notice every misaligned edge in a private study; hotel procurement managers whose fit-out schedule cannot absorb remedial work on a 20-unit library installation; and residential developers whose show apartment bookshelf will be the first thing prospective buyers examine at close range. For all of them, the answer is the same: factory-direct, one drawing, one team, one inspection before it ships.

“A bookshelf with solid wood, steel and smoked glass only works when all three materials are machined and fitted by the same team from the same drawing. Anything else is assembly, not craftsmanship.”

What Interior Designers, Hotel Buyers and Project Directors Say About JL&C Custom Bookcases

“We specified a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf wall for our hotel’s reading lounge — fourteen modular units spanning the full wall width, walnut stain solid wood, matte black steel frame, smoked bronze glass on the upper enclosed bays. JL&C provided a technical drawing within three days of our brief, confirmed every shelf spacing and frame alignment in writing, and delivered all fourteen units on schedule. The steel frames aligned perfectly across the full wall span. The smoked glass tone against the walnut was exactly the material relationship I had designed for. Outstanding production quality and a straightforward procurement process.”

Hiroshi Tanaka

Interior Design Director, Boutique Hotel Group

“My client needed a bespoke bookshelf for a private home study — natural oil solid oak, brushed gold steel frame, smoked grey glass sliding doors on the upper half, open shelves below. JL&C flagged a minor clearance issue with the sliding door track before production and resolved it in the revised drawing the same day. The finished piece was exactly what the drawing showed: clean steel-to-wood transitions, properly seated glass panels and an oil finish that showed the oak grain beautifully. My client has had it two years and the surface still looks exactly as it did on delivery.”

Isabelle Fontaine

Senior Interior Designer, Private Residential Studio

“Our premium apartment development required eight matching bookshelves across eight separate study rooms — all the same overall dimensions, ash stain solid wood, brushed silver steel, smoked glass hinged doors on top two bays. JL&C handled eight individual unit specifications within a single production batch, coordinated consolidated freight so all eight arrived together, and every unit assembled without adjustment on site. Factory-direct pricing made solid wood and electroplated steel achievable within our FF&E budget. Already committed to JL&C for the next phase of the development.”

Frequently Asked Questions About the JL&C Custom Solid Wood Bookshelf with Smoked Glass

Why is solid wood used for the carcass rather than wood veneer or MDF board?

Solid wood is specified for the bookshelf carcass because of its structural density and load performance, not simply its visual quality. A tall freestanding bookshelf carrying books, decorative objects and display items accumulates significant load at the shelf joints over years of continuous use. Solid timber resists joint deflection, surface denting and long-term structural racking far more effectively than boards built over MDF or particleboard cores, regardless of the quality of veneer applied to the surface. Solid wood can also be sanded and re-finished if surface wear occurs over the product’s lifetime — engineered board with a veneer skin cannot be treated this way. Where the bookshelf is specified for a hotel, a private villa or any setting where the piece is expected to perform for 15 or more years, solid wood is the correct structural and material choice.

What is smoked tinted tempered glass (茶玻) and how is it different from clear glass?

Smoked tinted tempered glass — commonly referred to in Chinese furniture specification as 茶玻 (tea glass) — is float glass produced with a bronze or warm grey tint integrated during the manufacturing process, before the glass is thermally tempered for safety and durability. The tint is consistent throughout the full thickness of the glass, so it does not scratch or peel from the surface over time. Compared to clear glass, smoked tinted glass reduces direct visibility into the enclosed shelf bay by approximately 40 to 60 percent, depending on lighting conditions and the distance of the viewer. This creates a semi-private visual effect: the shelf contents remain visible enough to identify and locate individual books or objects, but the glass does not expose every item with the flat, unfiltered transparency of clear glazing. The warm bronze or grey tonal quality of smoked glass also softens the visual contrast between the glass and the objects behind it, producing a more refined and composed appearance than clear glass on the same shelf.

What sizes are available, and can the bookshelf be built to floor-to-ceiling height?

Standard production covers widths from 80 cm to 220 cm, heights from 180 cm to 240 cm, and depths from 28 cm to 45 cm. For floor-to-ceiling installations, the exact ceiling height is confirmed at the drawing stage and the unit is dimensioned to the specified fit — with a deliberate ceiling gap for installation clearance, a compression-fit detail, or a custom ceiling-contact trim. For room studies, hotel libraries or executive offices where a wall exceeds 220 cm in width, the installation is produced as modular units of 80 to 120 cm each, bolted together on site, with the steel frames aligned and matched across the full span for a seamless appearance. Modular configurations can span any wall width without practical limit. Provide your wall dimensions, ceiling height and any architectural constraints at the enquiry stage and our team will propose a configuration drawing.

What smoked glass panel options are available — fixed panels, hinged doors or sliding doors?

All three options are available. Fixed panels are mounted within the steel frame channels and are the simplest configuration — the smoked glass is permanently enclosed within the steel frame on all four edges, with no opening mechanism. Hinged doors are mounted on concealed or exposed steel hinges finished in the selected frame finish, and open outward from the unit. Sliding doors operate on a recessed top track and slide horizontally, requiring no clearance in front of the unit for door swing — this option is particularly suited to installations where the bookshelf is positioned close to a wall, another piece of furniture or a seating area. Glass thickness for all three configurations is available in 5 mm (lighter, standard for most residential applications) or 8 mm (heavier, provides a more substantial feel and is recommended for taller door panels or high-traffic commercial environments). All configuration choices are confirmed in the technical drawing before production.

Standard solid wood species available include oak, walnut, ash and pine. Oak is the most widely specified option: it offers a strong, clearly defined grain pattern, good surface hardness relative to its weight, and takes both stain and lacquer finishes consistently well. Walnut is the premium species choice — its naturally dark, rich grain requires minimal staining and produces an exceptional result under clear or oil finish. Ash is a lighter-toned, fine-grained alternative to oak, suited to interior palettes in the lighter neutral range. For hotel, serviced apartment and high-traffic commercial environments, we recommend oak or walnut with a stain-plus-lacquer finish rather than natural oil: the lacquer film provides a harder, lower-maintenance surface that withstands the regular cleaning protocols of commercial use more effectively than an oil finish.

What wood finish and stain options are available?

Three surface finish approaches are available. Natural oil finish penetrates the wood fibre and enhances the grain depth and warmth of the timber — it produces the most natural-looking result but requires periodic re-oiling (approximately once every 12 to 24 months, depending on the environment) to maintain the surface condition. Clear lacquer builds a transparent protective film over the wood surface: it shows the natural grain through the film, provides a harder and more moisture-resistant surface than oil, and requires no periodic re-oiling. Stain-plus-lacquer applies a colour tone before the lacquer coat: standard stain options include light ash, honey, mid-walnut, dark espresso and ebonised black. Custom stain colours specified by RAL reference, NCS code or a submitted timber sample are available with a test panel approval step before the full unit enters production. All lacquer options are available in matte, semi-gloss and gloss sheen levels.

What steel frame finish options are available, and how long do they last?

Four standard electroplated finishes are available: brushed gold, brushed silver, satin chrome and matte black. All are applied via an electroplating process performed entirely in-house at our Shanghai factory, which allows us to control plating thickness, surface preparation consistency and finish quality across an order. Electroplated stainless steel at this specification resists tarnishing, surface oxidation and normal abrasion under residential and hotel interior conditions for the full working life of the unit. For environments with higher ambient humidity — coastal residential properties, hotel rooms in tropical climates, spa or poolside adjacent installations — brushed silver or satin chrome are the recommended options, as they show water marking less readily than brushed gold. A powder coat overcoat can be added over the electroplated finish for additional wear resistance in very high-traffic commercial settings, confirmed at the order stage.

Can the bookshelf be used as a room divider with no back panel?

Yes. The back panel can be omitted entirely for room divider, peninsula or island placement. The structural integrity of the unit in this configuration is maintained by the stainless steel frame, which runs the full height of the unit and provides the lateral rigidity that a back panel would otherwise contribute. For units specified without a back panel and intended to be visible from both sides, the solid wood shelf edges and steel frame are visible from the rear as well as the front — both are finished to the same standard in this configuration. If a fully finished double-sided appearance is required, rear-facing shelves can be finished in a contrasting paint colour or a matching wood stain. This is confirmed in the technical drawing at the specification stage.

Can multiple bookshelf units be joined to create a continuous wall installation?

Yes. Individual bookshelf units can be produced to a consistent width and installed side-by-side to form a continuous wall of shelving. Steel frames are dimensioned and aligned across units so that the vertical frame uprights read as a consistent rhythm across the full wall span, with no visible gap or misalignment between adjacent units. Units are bolted together on site through pre-drilled fixing points. For very wide wall installations — hotel library lounges, corporate reception walls, large residential studies — we generally recommend modular units of 80 to 120 cm width for practical shipping and installation handling, rather than a single unit exceeding 220 cm in width. The configuration, module widths and alignment details are all specified and confirmed in the technical drawing before production.

How many shelves can be included, and can shelf heights be adjusted after installation?

Standard configurations accommodate between 3 and 8 shelves per unit. Shelves can be specified as fixed — dadoed directly into the solid wood carcass uprights for maximum load capacity — or as adjustable, mounted on metal shelf pegs at 5 cm increment positions across the full interior height of the unit. For units primarily intended for book storage with heavy hardcover volumes, fixed shelves are recommended as they distribute load directly into the carcass joints rather than relying on shelf peg hardware. For units intended for mixed display — combining books, decorative objects, framed photographs and varying-height items — an adjustable peg system provides the flexibility to reconfigure shelf heights after installation without tools or specialist knowledge.

Is the bookshelf suitable for hotel library lounges and commercial interiors?

Yes. The material specification of the JL&C Custom Bookshelf — kiln-dried solid wood carcass, welded stainless steel frame and smoked tempered glass panels — is entirely appropriate for hotel and commercial use. The baked lacquer or stain-plus-lacquer wood finish is resistant to the regular cleaning protocols of commercial housekeeping environments. The electroplated steel frame meets hospitality-grade durability standards. The smoked tempered glass meets safety requirements for enclosed furniture in public-access spaces. The piece has been specified and installed in hotel reading lounges, private library rooms within hotel executive floors, boutique hotel lobby display cases, corporate reception walls and high-end serviced apartment study areas. For projects requiring coordinated multi-unit installation, our team manages specification, production batch scheduling and logistics as a single project.

What is the minimum order quantity and how long does production take?

The minimum order quantity is 1 piece — there is no volume requirement. Standard production lead time is 25 to 35 business days from written order confirmation and receipt of deposit. This covers all production stages: timber milling and kiln-drying verification, steel frame fabrication and electroplating, glass cutting and tempering, assembly and fitting, multi-stage quality inspection and export packaging. For batch orders of 10 or more pieces — hotel programmes, residential development fit-outs or multi-site commercial installations — the lead time is confirmed individually at the quotation stage based on total scope and configuration complexity. If you have a specific installation date, advise our team at the enquiry stage so production scheduling can be planned against your timeline.

How is the bookshelf packaged for international shipping, and how does on-site assembly work?

Every bookshelf is disassembled into its primary components for export packaging: solid wood shelf panels and carcass sections are individually foam-wrapped with rigid edge protection boards; the steel frame components are bubble-wrapped and strapped; smoked glass panels receive double foam wrapping with rigid board protection on all four edges. All components for one unit are packed together within a single reinforced export carton loaded on a wooden pallet for container freight handling. FOB Shanghai is the standard shipping term; CIF to destination port is available on request. On-site assembly follows an illustrated assembly guide included in every carton, connecting all components at pre-drilled and pre-machined fixing points. A standard single-unit bookshelf can be assembled by two people in approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

Can the bookshelf be coordinated with other JL&C furniture in the same room or project?

Yes. JL&C Furniture produces a full coordinating range of home office and living room furniture, including home office desks, writing desks, console tables, TV units, display cabinets, sideboards, buffet credenzas, coffee tables, dining tables and bedroom furniture. Matching wood species, stain colour, lacquer sheen, steel frame finish and glass type across a complete home office set, hotel room package or residential interior project is available on request. If your project scope includes multiple furniture categories — for example, a bookshelf, a writing desk and a matching console for the same study — provide the full list of pieces, quantities and dimensions at the enquiry stage and our team will prepare a coordinated specification and combined production quotation for your review.
